“One Eyed Wayne” Smith

Ol’ One Eyed Wayne is no stranger to music. Growing up with “cool” older brothers, his taste in music often focused on what was popular with them and even his parents! From the early beginnings, his mother June used to sing “Mockin’ Bird Hill” by: Les Paul and Mary Ford to him to soothe him. Elvis, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty and Hank Williams were staples in the house as a young child. Later on, during the late 70’s, he would discover Rock n’ Roll and the chaos that comes with it.

Early influences of bands such as Boston, KISS, AC/DC & Led Zeppelin would forge a love of music that gave him quite a good ear. His love of music would eventually lead to him picking up the electric guitar and bass. Being a multi-Instrumentalist, he hears “all” the composition and appreciates each part of a song. After moving from California to Oklahoma in 1980, Wayne’s family was fortunate enough to have cable T.V. and he got to witness the birth of MTV. Fueling his fire, were all the great artists of those early years and growing artists he would have never been exposed to. Bands like Duran Duran, The Go-Go’s, and the current top 10 hit of the day would accompany him in his day to day life. Being a kind of loner, music would become to him as a best friend while trying to navigate life as a confused teen-ager. Sitting for hours with only a stereo and headphones, he would escape into the music.

Fast forward, now in his Mid 50’s, his taste has grown in many directions and encompasses several decades of great music. He has been exposed to many “New” artists like Clutch, King Buffalo, and others thanks to A2Z Radio. Join him at 5pm central standard time every Sunday for his “It’s 5 O’ Clock Somewhere” show.
